Babafemi Ojudu: A Quintessential Leader
By Olajide Omotayo Samuel
Babafemi Ojudu is an erstwhile Senator who represented Ekiti Central Senatorial district and the current Special Adviser to president on Political Matters.
He hailed from Ado Ekiti, the State capital of Land of Honour. He was actively involved in the war against the military junta of the late General Sani Abacha, who was believed as a real enemy of democracy and its consolidation.
But, he was drained, dejected and tortured by the former head of state for standing for the progressive agenda that will assist our unborn generations. He was crucified, detained and jailed for nine months– where he was never privileged to diet well nor clothe properly. Clearly speaking, Senator Ojudu has written his name in gold and his style of leadership must be retained as food for thoughts by lovers of democracy.
A disciplinarian per excellence rose to limelight via his largess and readiness to help the youths. He has upheld a clean record of excellence by defeating the so called “Ore mekunu” in the 2011 senatorial election. A scenario that trashed the Ex Governor( Ayo Fayose) to embrace defeat and ignominy. He remained the only Ekiti politician to have defeated the tyrant in a face to face contest.
He is a strategist and astute political warlord. When it was dawning on him that, the 2018 Gubernatorial primary election has been finalised, he quickly opted out because his political calculations showed the whole result already. Not minding the huge financial implications, he withdrew from the race and later declared his support for the the party, All Progressives Congress which he has invested a lot on and the party later won the election.
His political structure which cuts across the length and breadth of the State was collapsed in favor of All Progressives Congress, in order to work in synergy. What has been observed in the PDP arrangement is a signal to the then opposition party, APC. Should any mistake was done, a misfire is inevitable.
During his campaign tour to all local governments that cut across Ekiti in preparation for the then APC gubernitorial primary election, he was accepted by all. He is a father to all and his deliberation with his followers were fascinating with utmost sense of belonging. He would supervised proper feeding of his followers before, during and after campaign.
My engagement with him has uncovered so much good qualities that should be found in a modern day politician. He has carved out his niche and his good works cannot be forgotten in a hurry. Indeed, Senator Ojudu has helped many Ekiti youths to pursue their career and as well secured better future for Ekiti youths, and across the country. Ekiti is lucky to have Senator Babafemi Ojudu.
